60cm Soom Gena face up repaint Camui

Camui is a Soom Gena resin head for 60cm ball-joint dolls. I found this head on eBay during one of my many searches. You don't often find resin heads for low prices so I had to pick this one up and add my own artistic touch to it. I planned originally to remove the previous owner's face-up but when I got it, I was surprised at the amount of flaws it had.

First came the removal of the original paint. I don't know what the original OOAK artist used to paint with but the resin was stained. It took several attempts to get it thoroughly clean, and more than one resin-safe type of cleaning agent. I also cleaned the head-cap as it was visibly darker than the face, possibly because the previous owner cleaned the face before painting but not the cap. Whatever the case, they now match as you can see in the photos below that track the progress from painted to un-.

After removing the paint I noticed that the artist had tried to sand the features only they used a coarse grain sandpaper, resulting in cobwebby scratches on the cheeks and lips. They also drilled three earring holes (one in one ear, two in another) and on one ear, they scarred the side of the head, just behind the ear. There was nothing I could do about the drill mark behind the ear but it's not visible when there's a wig on the doll - even a short one. The scratches I was able to fix by using finer grain Zoukei-moura sandpaper sponges. The resin is now smooth again.

After fixing up the base head, I did the face-up. I used liberal amounts of Mr Super Clear matte sealant, along with Zoukei-moura Liquitex paints and watercolors, all fixed with more sealant. The lips and lining of both eyes were coated in three layers of high-shine acrylic gloss. As I'm a nit-picker, I went as far as to blush the ears for an additional level of beautiful detail. Once I was done, I selected some lashes and then, once the lashes had dried for a couple of days, I added hazel eyes (Eyeco Soft-glass 'Champagne' eyes, to be exact). I really like the way this doll came around.

Camui was sold January 2007.
