Volks Dollfie Callisto from Xena: Warrior Princess

Name: Callisto
Eyes: Smouldering brown
Gender: Grrrl
Skin: Rosey-peach
Hair: Golden blond
Occupation: Psychotic swordswoman
Obsession: Destroying Xena
Long-term Goal: Become a goddess

I used to watch Xena: Warrior Princess on television when it was still in production. It was cheesy but a good fantasy romp and is still better than a lot of the crap they put on the air these days. My favorite villain from the storyline was Callisto (played by the gorgeous Hudson Leick), a hot-headed warrior woman hellbent on revenge. Xena, in her evil days, destroyed Callisto's village and ever since, the blond ambition has been stalking her, trying to kill her in various action-packed ways.

I always liked the Callisto character but my inspiration for this doll comes more from the fact that I found a Barbie-sized replica of her outfit on eBay. It seemed a fun challenge and here you see the end result. I'm rather satisfied -- the maniacal look on her face can be eased to a softer one by pushing her head up but I favor the blood-thirsty leer that's primarily shown here in this gallery. ;) Her face-up and blush comes from a combination of Zoukei-Moura acrylics and pastels, sealed with several coats of MSC doll spray to preserve the color.

The outfit is actually pretty nice except that the boots came to me with cracks in the faux leather near the heels. I suppose one could say they look 'lived in'. You can see the damage here, here and here. There's not much I can do to fix them but as you can see in the other pics, you hardly see them when she's posed, even in photos.

The base doll was a blank Volks Dollfie EB-E 23cm doll. Her hair is incredibly soft English mohair I dyed myself, to get just the right color. I found some thin leather thong at the fabric store and used that (and two clear plastic rubber bands) to secure the twin braids I wove her longer fore-locks into, like Callisto wears her hair in the show. It wasn't easy but I think the end result is worth the effort.

Callisto was sold June 10, 2007.
